Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and a hidden gem for trekkers seeking fewer crowds, wildlife encounters, and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 4-day trekking adventure begins at Momela Gate in Arusha National Park and ascends through montane forests, moorlands, and alpine deserts to the summit at Socialist Peak.
Accompanied by an armed ranger and an experienced mountain guide, you’ll walk through rich wildlife zones where zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and antelopes roam freely. The summit day rewards you with a stunning sunrise over Kilimanjaro and unforgettable views of Meru’s crater.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha – Momela Gate – Miriakamba Hut
Morning transfer from Arusha/Moshi to Momela Gate
Registration and meet the trekking crew (guide, porters, armed ranger)
Begin hike through lush montane forest, spotting wildlife like giraffes and zebras
Overnight at Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)
Hiking Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
Steeper climb through the forest into the moorland
Spectacular views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone
Hot lunch at Saddle Hut (3,570 m)
Optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m)
Hiking Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Saddle Hut – Socialist Peak – Miriakamba Hut
Midnight start for summit push via Rhino Point (3,800 m)
Reach Socialist Peak (4,566 m) at sunrise with views of Kilimanjaro
Descend back to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue to Miriakamba Hut
Hiking Distance: 5 km up / 13 km down
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut – Momela Gate – Arusha
Leisurely descent through forest trails back to Momela Gate
Transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi
