Forest Camp

Lemosho Gate to Forest Camp

After breakfast, you depart Arusha for the Lemosho Gate, the official starting point of one of the best Kilimanjaro climbing routes. This scenic drive takes you through local villages, rolling landscapes, and the foothills of Africa’s highest mountain.

Once registration is complete, your Lemosho Route trek officially begins. Today’s trail leads through the dense Afromontane rainforest zone, a magical section filled with ancient fig trees, towering junipers, hagenia forests, and rich mountain vegetation. The forest is alive with birdsong and occasional monkey sightings, creating an immersive wilderness experience.

After approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours of trekking, you arrive at Forest Camp, situated at 2,780 meters (9,120 feet). Here, your private mountain crew, including our professional guides and dedicated porters — including highly skilled female porters and women mountain guides — will welcome you with warm hospitality, fresh meals, and comfortable camping arrangements.

Shira Camp

Forest Camp to Shira Camp

Today’s climb takes you out of the rainforest and into the dramatic highland landscapes of the Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic formations on Kilimanjaro. As you ascend, the terrain gradually opens into sweeping moorland with giant lobelias, heather, and expansive mountain vistas.

The journey to Shira 1 Camp takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views on the mountain. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest, enjoy a hot lunch, and explore the surrounding volcanic formations, including the famous Shira Cathedral, known for its spectacular sunset views.

This stage is especially important for high-altitude acclimatization, one of the reasons why the Lemosho Route has one of the highest summit success rates on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Moir Camp

Shira Camp to Moir Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure continues toward Moir Camp, a quieter and less crowded section of the mountain that offers excellent acclimatization benefits. The route today is scenic and gradual, allowing your body to adapt naturally to the rising altitude.

After reaching Moir Camp at 3,995 meters (13,200 feet), you will take part in an afternoon acclimatization hike based on the “climb high, sleep low” strategy — one of the most effective methods for summit preparation.

At Joyful Safaris and Tours, safety is our top priority, and every part of the itinerary is carefully designed to maximize your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully and safely.

Barranco Camp

Moir Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This is one of the most important acclimatization days of the entire climb. The trail ascends to the dramatic Lava Tower at 4,600 meters (15,000 feet), a key altitude checkpoint on the mountain.

After spending time here for lunch and altitude adaptation, the route descends to Barranco Camp, allowing your body to recover while still benefiting from the high-altitude exposure. This method significantly improves summit success.

The Barranco Valley is one of the most beautiful sections of Mount Kilimanjaro, surrounded by giant senecio plants, volcanic cliffs, and spectacular views of the summit.

At Joyful Safaris and Tours, our experienced guides — including our empowering team of female mountain guides — ensure that every climber feels safe, confident, and fully supported.
