Safari Overview

The 6 Days Shira Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most scenic and adventurous trekking experiences in Tanzania, designed for hikers seeking a less crowded yet highly rewarding path to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This route begins at a higher altitude on the Shira Plateau, offering dramatic views of the mountain’s vast landscapes, volcanic formations, and alpine wilderness.

Unlike busier Kilimanjaro climbing routes, the Shira Route delivers a more exclusive trekking safari feel, where hikers pass through changing ecological zones—from misty montane forests filled with monkeys and exotic birds to the rugged alpine desert where hardy vegetation survives extreme conditions. Early stages of the trek align with the Lemosho Route before merging with the Machame Route at Shira 2 Camp, creating a well-balanced climb with excellent acclimatization opportunities.

This Kilimanjaro trekking package is ideal for adventure seekers looking for a premium mountain climbing safari in Tanzania with a strong success rate due to gradual altitude adjustment and professional mountain support.

Shira 2 Camp

Shira Gate – Hike to Shira 2 Camp

The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha through rural Tanzania toward Kilimanjaro National Park. At Shira Gate, the trek starts across a beautiful high-altitude plateau with sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. The trail gradually ascends through open moorland landscapes before reaching the camping area.

The environment shifts quickly into alpine terrain, where you may spot unique vegetation adapted to high altitude conditions. The air becomes cooler and thinner as you approach your first overnight stop at Shira 2 Camp, a stunning campsite set on the vast Shira Plateau.

Lava Tower

Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

This is a key acclimatization day on the Kilimanjaro Shira Route. The trail climbs steadily toward the dramatic Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation that stands as one of the most iconic features on the mountain. Along the way, trekkers enjoy breathtaking views of the alpine desert and distant peaks.

After reaching high altitude at Lava Tower, the route descends into the lush Barranco Valley, where giant senecio plants and unique alpine vegetation dominate the landscape. The day ends at Barranco Camp, beautifully located beneath towering cliffs.

Today the trek gradually ascends toward high-altitude base camp. The scenery becomes more rugged and barren as you enter the alpine desert zone, where only hardy vegetation survives the extreme conditions.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, climbers rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally and physically for the summit push. This is the final stop before the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

From Stella Point, the final push leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Glaciers, snow, and endless horizons create a powerful sense of achievement. After celebrating briefly, the descent begins back through Barafu Camp for rest and continues down to Mweka Camp, located in a lush forest zone.
